This year's production <br />01151,819 pounds 01 brook, cut- <br />throat, brown, and rainbow trout <br />Ilngerlings IS a little more than 50 <br />percent of capacity, II road con- <br />ditions were improved for year- <br />round access, then production <br />could be increased to the full ca- <br />pacity 01 the hatchefY. Most olthe <br />fish are used to stock Flaming <br />Gorge, Fontenelle, and Steinaker <br />Resefvoirs and the Green Rivef <br />below Flammg Gorge Dam. <br />2. Hotchkiss National FIsh Hatchery <br />IS located on the North Fork of the <br />GunnIson neaf Hotchkiss, Colo- <br />rado. Its output 01 3,021,246 fin- <br />gerlings and 50,000 larger-sized <br />rainbow trout went principally lor <br />stocking requirements at Blue <br />Mesa, Crawford, Lemon, and Sil- <br />ver Jack Reservoirs in Colofado <br />and NavajO ReserVOir In Colorado <br />and New Mexico, <br /> <br />One national wildlife refuge and three <br />waterfowl areas under state adminis- <br />tration are being developed in connec- <br />tion with the Colorado River Storage <br />Project. <br /> <br />1. Seedskadee Nalional Wildlile ReI- <br />uge lies along the Green River <br />beJow Fontenelle Dam, Wyoming. <br />The land use plan 10f this area <br />requires purchase of approxi- <br /> <br />mately 11,900 acres of land to be <br />used lor waterfowl management <br />purposes in conjunction with ad- <br />joining publicly owned land Ad- <br />ministration of acquired and pub- <br />lic lands for wildlile management <br />purposes began in 1966. Land <br />purchase negotiations continued <br />during the year, but no major <br />structufal improvements will be <br />programed until a sullicient devel- <br />opment area has been obtained <br /> <br />2. Browns Park Waterfowl Manage- <br />ment Area is located below Flam- <br />Ing Gorge ReserVOir on the Green <br />River in the viCinIty 01 the Utah- <br />Colorado State hne. Management <br />area headquarters have been <br />completed, and 270 aCfes of Im- <br />pounded water and related water- <br />fowl food plots have been devel- <br />oped at two major sites. Work <br />continued at the third site to devel- <br />op an additional 120 acres 01 <br />pond-marsh habitat for waterfowl <br />togethef with an expansion of the <br />acreage 01 wildllle food plots_ The <br />overall management area is al- <br />ready allracting appreciable num- <br />bers of resident and migratory <br />game bird populations and IS in- <br />creasing in public popularity both <br />as a fishing and hunting site. <br />3 Miller Mesa Waterfowl Area is <br />located on the west shore of the <br />Navajo Reservoir just south 01 the <br />Colorado-New Mexico State tine. <br />A small reservoir and two terrace <br /> <br />ponds have been completed and <br />are full About 170 acres of agri- <br />cultural land have been planted <br />lor wildlife management purposes <br />10 barley, oals, wheat, and allalla. <br />The area has not yet been opened <br />to hunting Waterfowl use patterns <br />indicate thaI birds Irom other ag- <br />ricultural and resting areas in the <br />San Juan VaJJey are using the <br />Miller Mesa site with increasing <br />frequency. <br /> <br />4, Desert Lake Waterfowl Manage- <br />ment Area compfises 2,480 acres <br />01 acquired and public domain <br />land located in eastern Ulah near <br />Huntington North Reservoir. Ad- <br />ministered by the Utah State Divi- <br />sion of Wildlife Resources since <br />January 1968, the area's contri- <br />bution to waterfowl resources <br />management was significantly in- <br />creased by rehabilitatJOn 01 the <br />histonc Desert Lake Dike and <br />completion of live addItional diked <br />areas below the existing impound- <br />ment. These structures are all <br />Iii led and the lakes are used by <br />resident and game bird popula- <br />tions and migratory waterfowl. <br />Effectiveness of the area will be <br />enhanced by improvement in one <br />waler supply facility. The unlin- <br />ished work includes 16,000 leet of <br />plastic and concrete piping from <br />the end of the Huntington Canal <br />system northward, control struc- <br />tures. and a bypass direct to Des- <br />ert Lake.
