This section contains a preliminary assessment of probable
impacts of both plans on ecological and aesthetic resources. Potential mitigation
measures are also described and discussed. Mitigation measures could involve impact
avoidance, minimization, rectification, reduction overtime, or compensation.

Both plans would cross an urban/agricultural fringe ecosystem and the urban
riparian l;lCosystem of the Cache La POHdre River. In the Fort Collins area, the Cache
La Poudre River was classified in 1979 asa highest-vahlel1 fishery resource because of
the l10cumented occurrence of two State special-concern species: Johnny uaner
(Elhe,)~tom:J..ni.g,rulll-.a perch) and common ,hiner (NotnlDiscortlutus--a minnow). Apart
from special-concern species occurrence, the Cache La Poudre River in this area is
clas<;itied <'I,a limited fishery resource ilccau>c th.., habit"l i;. ,hit u5Cdor i,sporadica!ly
or unpredictably used by spcciesofhigh interest.

The habitat along both ehannel diversion plans consists pwdomin antlyofirrigaled
pasture/hayland that is of limited value to wildlife. The grasslands are either cut or
grazed quite short. The riparian habiL1t along the (ache La Poudre River is dominakd
by peach leaf willow and is of high valllC to wildlife because of lu~h forage, water, and
abundanl resting or nesting siles. This habitat also has high scenic value.
