The Monument is drained by Pipestone Creek, which joins the Main Ditch at the
eastern boundary of the Monument area.

The area outside of the study area within I/2-mile radius, including the City of Pipestone, contained
several other previously identified buildings or structures listed on the National Register.

Infonnation was received from the SHPO regarding previous cultural resources investigations in or
around the study area. However, this list may not be complete because such archives do not require
for deposit all such unpublished reports. The Preliminary Bibliography section (attached) includes
these pertinent previous investigations. Some secondary sources related to a historical context for
Pipestone County are also included in the Preliminary Bibliography, but this list is not
comprehensive.

Contact with David Rambow at the Pipestone County Museum confirmed that there has been a
systematic survey of greater Pipestone's historic architectural resources. Other than the Pipestone
National Monument, no historic resources are within the Study Area

No previously unrecorded historic or prehistoric sites were identified during a pedestrian site visit.
This site visit focused mainly on the waterways and areas adjacent, and was not a comprehensive
or systematic survey of the entire Study Area.

CONCLUSION

During the Feasibility Phase, when alternatives and impact areas are identified, the SHPO should
be contacted again and asked for a formal, written determination regarding the presence and
significance of cultural resources in the study area. All cultural resources within the impact area
should be systematically identified, evaluated, and assessed regarding project impacts to ensure
compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and the National Environmental Policy Act.
