State staff in the Review & Compliance division of the
Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul examined site files for historic structures and archeological
sites. Federal repositories were also examined, including site files at the National Park Service,
National Register of Historic Places, in Washington, D.C. and the Library of Congress.

A preliminary search was conducted at both state and local agencies for published and unpublished
reports and documents related to cultural resources in the study area and the immediate vicinity.
Local contacts and historical associations were also contacted., including the Pipestone County
Museum.

In addition, a site visit was performed to identify any readily visible cultural resources adjacent to
the waterways within the study area. An intensive survey of the entire area within the study area
boundary was not done in this preliminary phase.

FINDINGS

Review of site files for archeology and historic structures at federal and state repositories revealed
one resource within the Study Area that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is
also a National Historic Landmark archeological site.
