Sandbags used In sandbag closures are generally ofburlap, about 19 X 36 inches empty, although <br />any type and size may be used n necessary. (A common size is 15 X 24 Inches.) Sandbags arefiUedwith earth about <br />two-thirds full, shaken down loosely but not tamped. The bags need not be tied U they are carefuny placed: .',~ open <br />unfilled end is folded back under the bag so the weight of the bag keeps ft dosed. The bags are laid In layer:. The bags <br />of the bottom layer laid lengthwise of the opening, the bags of the second layer laid crcsswise of the openi~g. the third <br />layer lengthwise and so on, each succeeding layer being laid In an altematli dlrectlon to the layer below. Each layer of <br />bags should be tamped or tramped into place, with loose earth or smaJJ bags placed in voids and I1Icesses as a fiDer. <br />Each layer 01 bags should be constructed to full height. Sase width of a dosure is 2H + 3', whel1l H is the height in feel. <br />Side slopes should be roughly 1 to 1. <br /> <br />D-2 <br />
