2. ELEVATION-STORAGE RELATIONSHIP.

Several methods have been developed for determining the elevation
storage relationship for a reservoir. These methods involve the ,use of topographic
mapping or surveys and apply geometric techniques to determine the volume for each
elevation.

2.1 CONIC METHOD.

The conic method involves digitizing surface areas at each elevation
contour shown on topographic mapping. Geometric shape of the reservoir between
contours is assumed to be similar to a truncated cone. Therefore, incremental
volumes can be computed from the conic equation as shown in Figure 1. Volume of
a cone is computed as :

V = VaAh

(3)

where:

A = Surface area of circular portion of cone.
h = Height of the cone

The frustrum of a cone, which is the volume between two

bases is computed as:

V = Vah (A + A 2 + ..J A A )
1 1 2

(4)

where:

h = Distance between the two bases.
A lA 2 = Surface areas of base 1 and 2.

7-72
