South Dakota. The majority of <br />Pipestone lies to the west and south of the Main Ditch. Tbe prinuuy north-south highway <br />serving Pipestone is U.S. Highway 75. while State Highway 23 provides access from the <br />northeast and southwest. A vicinity map for the Pipestone area was previously presented <br />in figure I. <br /> <br />FLOOD mSTORY <br /> <br />A relatively smaIl percentage of Pipestone lies within the Main Ditch flood plain. <br />Several floods have been documented in Pipestone; however, very little statistical <br />information is available. The maximum flood of record was considered to be the flood of <br />10 April 1969. until major flooding occurred in May of 1993. Available information on <br />relevant flood events that occurred in 1938. 1957, 1969. 1990. and 1993 in the Pipestone <br />area is summarized below. <br /> <br />FLOOD OF 1938 <br />Loca1 newspaper reports stated that 3.95 inches of rain feU in Pipestone over a 2- <br />day period. Flooding and extensive damage to crops. livestock, and homes resulted from <br />the runoff. Railroad lines experienced washouts around bridges and along the tracks. <br />Approximately 15 road bridges were damll8ed in Pipestone County.
