The <br />western prairie fringed orchid has been identified in these areas of the park. The NPS has <br />serious concerns regarding any changes in flow in Main Ditch and the resultant potential <br />impacts to the National Monument. <br /> <br />SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC <br />PQpulation. The 1990 U.S. Census of Population and Housing reported a total <br />population of 4.554 persons for the city of Pipestone, which compares to 10.491 within <br />Pipestone County and approximately 4,375.665 for the State of Minnesota. The city of <br />Pipestone population represents about 43 percent of the county population and about 0.1 <br />percent of the State population. The population of Pipestone has remained relatively <br />steady over the past 10 years. The 1980 population was reported to be 4,887. Pipestone <br />is the county seat of Pipestone County. Minnesota. According to the city of Pipestone's <br />Comprehensive Plan (Southwest Regional Development Commission, 1991), the <br />population for Pipestone County is projected to decrease between 2.7 percent and 3.3 <br />percent every 5 years. <br /> <br />Employment. Major sources of employment for persons in Pipestone include <br />professional services. retail trade. and manufacturing. Agriculture is another source of <br />employment for persons in the city and in the county. There were 3,524 persons, age 16 <br />years and over. who were employed in Pipestone during 1989 according to U.s. Census <br />data.
