I
II
I
I
I
II
II
II
II
II
II
II
I
II
II
II
II
I
II

There is an old municipal landfill located within city property to the DOrth of the
corporate limits along Main Ditcb, just east of tile National Monument. It was reported
by the Pipestone City Administrator that the landfill had been closed for approximately
30 years. The landfill was reportedly underwater during the flood events of 1993.
According to the NPS. it is suspected that elevated mercury levels could be related to the
flooding of the landfill.

According to the Minnesota DNR, poor water quality in Pipestone Creek appears
to be affecting riparian vegetation at the Pipestone National Monument. Channelization
of the Main Ditch has increased sediment load and caused an overall degradalion of
vegetation within the channel corridor. The Main Ditch is grass lined and minimal
volunteer tree growth occurs.

The Main Ditch riverine system was the only classification of wetlands identified
on the NWI maps or through photointerpretation within the study area. A field
investigation for wetlands was not conducted.

The western prairie fringed orchid (J>latanthera praecl~) is a federal1y listed
threatened plant species which may be present in the project area according to the U. S.
Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). The Natural Heritage Program database of the
Minnesota DNR indicates that these flowering plants have been observed within the
Pipestone National Monument. Candidate species (Category) for Federal listing
identified within Pipestone County include the Dakota skipper butterfly (J{~
tI""ota~, loggerhead shrike Q .anius ludovicianus). plains topminnow (fundulus
sciadicllll), and the Topeka shiner (NotrQpis tristis-tqpdr'l). Topeka shiners wm:
documented within Pipestone Creek in 1989.

8
