..

.

~

General commands used for either graphics software consist of two types:
a character and a symbol specification. Each specification consists of two
parts: the first part contains one a1phaeha1'aeter, either a "C" for character
or an "S" for symbol. The second part contains the applicable specification.
For characters (C), the second part is one character which may be anyone of
the 26 alphabetic letters as well as IIlOst special characters. For symbols
(S), the second part is a one or two digit nlllllber corresponding to a software
generated symbol. Typical valid nUlbers and their corresponding SYMbols
are shown in figure . As an eXIIIIP1e, if we wanted the character "."
plotted at each data point. the specification would be entered as: "C.".
Likewise, if we wanted to plot the syaGo1 "X" a.t each data point, we would
enter the specification:

"S12"

Similar in nature to the symbol specifications, the line specifications
consist of GCS oriented commands such as: HULL, LINE. DASHLINE, TICKLINE,
ALPHALINE. They also consist of commands that in one specification include
both the line type as well as specifications related to that line type similar
to the .C." or "S12" commands mentioned previously. The first part of the
line specification indicates the type of line: "D" for dash-line, "T" for
tick~line, and "A" for alpha-line. The second part of the line specification
consists of a specification for that particular type of line. For dash-
lines, it indicates the nature of the dash line, the length of the line
seglents and the length of the gapped segments. For ticked lines, it indicates
the length of the tick in the plus direction, the minus direction and the
distance between ticks. For alpha lines, it indicates the alphanumeric character

23
