<br />I <br />'. <br /> <br />Family Income. The median family income in Black Hawk was approximately <br />$6,600 in 1970. This figure is lower than the median family income of $7,600 <br />in all of Gilpin County. This relationship is expected to I"emain the same. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Poverty Status. Of the total population, 39 persons or 12 percent were below <br />the poverty level as defined by the Bureau of Census. In Gilpin County, 19 <br />percent of the total population was below the poverty level in terms of personal <br />income. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Economic Base <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Employment. Table 1 describes employment characteristics for persons in <br />Black Hawk. In terms of the occupations of employed persons, the data <br />indicates a variety of occupations with the exception of farming and related <br />positions. Under the second category, "occupation by industry", the data <br />reveals that the major employers of Black Hawk persons are construction, <br />wholesale and retail trade, and public administration (government). Eighty- <br />one percent of the employed persons were employed in these oategori~s. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Unemployment. Gilpin County had a relatively low unemployment rate compared <br />to the state and other counties in the Denver region. In 1977 the Gilpin County <br />unemployment rate was 4.8 percent compared to 6.2 percent for the state and <br />6.0 percent for the Denver region. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Place of Work. Based on trends in Gilpin County, an increasing percentage <br />of Black Hawk personal income is being earned outside the county. Over 50 <br />percent of Gilpin County personal income was earned outside the county in <br />1974. * Most of these persons worked in the Denver metropolitan area indicating <br />Gilpin County's increasing role as a bedroom community. <br /> <br />I. <br />I <br /> <br />Construction and Assessed Valuation. New construction has not been a sig- <br />nificant economic factor in Black Hawk since 1970. In Gilpin County, however, <br />new residential construction has been steady, averaging about 50 new homes <br />per year since 1970.
