19. Floods - General. - As previously stated, flood producin

storms in the basin are usually of the cloudburst type and- cover a

relatively small area; therefore, flooding from anyone storm does not,

as a rule, occur along the entire length of the main stem. Floods which

originate west of Badito are largely dis~ipated before reaching_th

mouth of the river. In general, storms which center in the sectio

below Badito result in floods in the lower valley. Major floods f r"

which data could be obtained are discussed in the following paragr phs.

Additional information is given in Appendix B.
20. Flood of October 1911. - During the period September 26 ~o
October 6, 1911, a general storm occurred over Southwestern COlora,o,
resulting in the greatest floods of record in some streams heading fn
the San Juan Mountains. On October 4 and 5, the storm extended int
the headwaters of those streams originating on the east slope of th

Sangre de Cr.isto Range but did not affect the area east of the moun ains.

In the Upper Huerfano River the resulting flood was the greatest kn wn,

causing the failure of Goose Lake Dam (Reservoir capacity about 500

acre-feet) near the extreme headwaters. The ~eblo Chieftain of

October 6, 1911, described the flood as follows:

"With the bursting of the reservoir a huge wall of water
rushed down the valley a distance of 35 miles to Gardner where a
rancher lost his life, unable to escape the onrushing waters
which took away his home and barns and all his stock * * * two
men living close to Manzanares were drowned".

No data are available as to amount or duration of the flow. A high

water mark has been established at a point about one-half mile up-

stream from Federal Highway No. 85.87 and about 11 feet above the

present stream bed, but residents state that the present stream
channel is much wider than in 1911.

21. Flood of 1921. - The Pueblo storm of June 1921 extended i to

the lower reaches of the Huerfano River and caused a flood of undet r-

mined magnitude. No data are available except a high water mark

- 14 -
