I
I-e
I'
I
I
I
I
I
I
Ie
I'
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Purpose

This study has been initiated to provide a master plan for control measures
to minimize potential flood damage within the lower one third of the
Slaughterhouse Gulch drainage basin.

Study Area Description

The Slaughterhouse Gulch Master Plan study area encompasses the lower three
sub-basins of the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (U.D.F.C.D.)
Basin 1-05-5700-01 (Fig. 1. Interim Report). The study reach extends from
the confluence with the South Platte River to Powers Park, on the main
tributary, and from Windermere Street to the corner of Datura Street and
Littleton Boulevard, on the south tributary. Although the basin extends
eastward into Arapahoe County, the study area is located entirely within
Littleton.

The study area contains 0.71 square miles of the total basin area of 2.02
square miles.

A detailed physiographic and geographic description may be found on Pages
3 through 5 of the Interim Report.

Development Status

Development within the total basin encompasses about 90 percent of the
available land. Land uses include light industrial and commercial in the
lower reaches, and residential and commercial in the middle and upper
reaches.

The Interim Report states:

"... . with the present degree of development, the basin has a high
potential for flood damage. The channel ability to convey flood
flows is very limited and restricted in certain areas. Severe
encroachment has been made into the flood conveyance system at
numerous places within the basin."

"In the improved reaches, the major flood conveyance system is essent-
ially the streets. Low flows are accommodated with in-place storm
sewer systems. The improved properties adjoining the streets are
susceptible to flooding from the major storm events. These properties
accommodate single-family residences along Berry Circle and multi-
family residences, offices and light commercial along Windermere and
L ittl eton Boulevard."
