<br />LYONS COLORADO FLOOD HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN <br /> <br />steep, red sandstone mountains, and is <br />positioned below the North and South Saint <br />Vrain river canyons. The North and South <br />St. Vrain creeks meet towards the south <br />end of town to form the St. Vrain River <br />basin eventually emptying into the South <br />Platte river in eastern Colorado. The peak <br />run-off months are between May and <br />September. Precipitation in the mountains <br />west of Lyons is approximated at 17 inches <br />per year. <br /> <br />Many of the 1,227 residents (1990, U.S. <br />Census Bureau) are employed outside the <br />community and commute to nearby cities, <br />characterizing Lyons as a bedroom <br />community. However, fanning and <br />ranching still playa large role in the local <br />economy. Several residents are employed <br />at the largest industry in town, Martin <br />Marietta Cement - Western Division.
