Henz <br />Henz Meteorological Services <br /> <br />The deadly re-occurrence of flash flooding in the deserts of Arizona during the <br />summer monsoon season and winter recreation periods presents a seeming <br />meteorological paradox for emergency response agencies. The Flood Control <br /> <br />District of Maricopa County, Arizona has funded a two year Meteorological <br />Services Pilot Program (MSPP) to provide the final enhancement to local flood <br />warning which has already added improved detection and hydrological support <br />systems. The MSPP will provide enhanced flash flood prediction, communication <br />of flash flood predictions and the development of a flash flood warning program <br />in the rapidly growing Phoenix metropolitan region. The MSPP relies on a private <br />weather service which had experience during the Big Thompson flash flood to <br />apply and adapt proven predictive and communication capabilities to a challenging <br />desert environment. <br /> <br />Paleoflood Hydrology, Design of Hydraulic Structures, <br />and Water-Resources Management <br /> <br />Robert D. Uses include design of flood-warning systems, <br />flood-plain management, design of hydraulic structures in flood plains, management of riparian <br />ecosystems, and better utilization of the Nation" water resources. One of the greatest benefits <br />of paleoflood hydrology are estimates of maximum flooding in many thousands of years. <br />However, one lone standing issue pertains to the accuracy of discharge estimates made from <br /> <br />16 <br />
