Teresa Vasquez, Ramon Dominguez, <br />Oscar Fuentes, and Antonio Jose Maza <br />National Center for Disaster Prevention, Mexico <br /> <br />In Mexico flash floods mainly occur in the northwestern part of the Republic. This region is <br />characterized as semi-arid, with scarcity of vegetation cover, high altitudes and steep slopes. <br /> <br />The main problem that Mexican scientists had to face in the past years in the study of flash <br />floods, was the lack of rainfall and runoff data. Nowadays Mexico has improved the <br />hydrometeorological system, but still there is much to do in technological and social aspects in <br />order to diminish damage under this hazard conditions. <br /> <br />In this paper, the most important flash flood cases, that have caused considerable damage, are <br />described with some detail. <br /> <br />6 <br />
