All requirements for reinforced concrete pipe. except those
referring to reinforce, ment shall apply to ncm-'reinforced concrete
pipe.

The minimum class fOl: RCP pipe shall be Class-II with flexible
gasket material :meet:i.ng ASTM C443 and gasket bell and spigot
joints. The required pipe strength shall be dete, rmined from the
actual depth of cover" true load, and propose,d fi.eld conditions.
A typical design strength calculation shall be submitted to the
city for approval.

Corrugated metal pipe may be used in parks, grl!en belts, and other
open space areas upon approval of the city. Where corrugated pipe
is intended to be used as the storm sewer pipe or culvert material,
the minimum gage for the pipe shall be det:ermined from Colorado
Department of Transpor'::ation (COOT) Standard Plan M-603-l, November
1, 1992, or latest edition for actual dl!pth of cover. site
specific calculations may be submitted utilizinq the following
structural design specifications: 'AASHTO - Standard Specifications
for Highway Bridges ... Division 0, section :";, II.STM - Standard
Practice for Structural Design of corrugated S'teel Pipe, pipe
Arches, and Arches for Storm and Sanitary S,ewl~rs and other Buried
Applications, ASTM A796. The minimum gage, for corrugated metal
pipe buried beneath railroad tracks shall be determined from
American Railroad En:;rineers Association spElcification, AREA -
Section 4.9."

Also, when corrugated metal pipe is intended to be used as the
storm sewer pipe or culvert material, site soil pH and Rrnin,
minimum resistivity, tests shall be performed. pH shall be
measured for soil and lNater. Minimum resistivity s.hall be for soil
and water and shall be determined in the laboratory and not in the
field. Corrugated aluminum pipe may be used when t.he pH is between
4.5 and 9.0 and Rrnin is 500 ohm-em or grea.te:r. Galvanized steel
corrugated pipe may be used when the pH is bE!tvTeen 5.8 and 10.0 and
Rrnin is 2000 ohm-em or greater. Supplemental corrosion protection
coatings approved by the city shall be applied to corrugated steel
pipe when the pH is outside the above-stated range and/or Rrnin is
less than 2000 ohm-em..

Backfill of HDPE pipe or any flexible pipe is very critical. The
backfill is a major component to the structural integrity of the
pipe system. Bedding materials used and cOlIlpaction must have good
quality control for a successful pipe installation.. Bedding should
be at a minimum a CDOT #67 3/4-inch crushed rock, six to eight
inches deep under the pipe and backfilled to a foot over the pipe.
Design of backfill also must comply with the requirements of the
AASHTO Engineering Design Manual Section IS:.

RCP pipe and other rigid pipe systems are leSE; susceptible to
failure because of improper bedding and backfill procedures.

6-2

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
