The opportunity may now exist to construct certain flood and
erosion control measures which will mitigate future flood risks.

The proposed Colorado Highway No. 55 bridge design is for a
50-year flood discharge - 44,000 cfs. The 100-year discharge is
68,000 cfs. To utilize these bridge capacities, upstream levees
and dikes must be installed to direct flood flows to the bridges.

Due to the present flow direction of the South Platte River,
it is essential that the three existing left bank (north)
deflector dikes be reconditioned. These deflector dikes will
keep the river in its present alignment and will direct the river
and floodwaters to the Highway No. 55 bridges, The right bank
(~outh) has erosi6n protection which was installed by the
Colorado Division of wildlife.

In addition to the implementation of the structural measures
as outlined in this report, the Town'of Crook and Logan County
should continue its participation in the National Flood Insurance
Program which makes flood insurance available to individuals and
businesses. Individuals should be advised on the benefits of
implementing flood proofing measures on structures and dwellings
located in the floodplain. It is essential that floodplain
management practices be implemented to reduce future flood risk
within the community and surrounding areas,

LFL/bj

~

-14-
