HISTORY OF FLOODING , A description of some of the past flood events in the study area is provided in the following paragraphs (Ref. 2, 12). Significant floods have occurred on the Big Thompson River in years past. Reports of flood damage in the Thompson Valley go back to 1864 when settler's cabins were washed away, lowlands submerged and meadows destroyed (Ref. 2). Ma~ 31 - June 1, 1894 - The general storm of May 31 - June 1, 18 4, caused a flood which destroyed the Home Supply Company's dam near the mouth of the canyon. In the succeeding 112 years, twelve additional major floods have occurred. The years floods occurred and the reported flood -6- -7-
