The community is surrounded by thousands of acres <br />of irrigated cropland and ranchland. Flood-related problems <br />from the South Platte River have adversely impacted the economy <br />of the area. <br /> <br />Major transportation systems which serve the area are U.S. <br />Highway 138. Interstate 76. State Highway 55 and the Union <br />Pacific Railroad. The embankments and bridges of these traffic <br />systems are factors in determining flow regimes of floodwater. <br />The Colorado Division of Wildlife owns and operates the <br />Tamarack State wildlife Area. The development within the <br />Wildlife Area includes fencing. wood and herbaceous plants. <br />heavy growth of grasses. trees and underbrush for wildlife. <br />Water development activities include construction of flow <br />deflection dikes and dams to form small ponds for wildlife <br />watering. <br /> <br />FLOOD RELATED REPORTS <br /> <br />The following studies have been completed and are helpful <br />in formulating a plan-of-improvement for mitigating flood and <br />sub-surface impacts for the study reach. <br /> <br />1) U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Omaha District; Special <br />Flood Hazard Information Report. South Platte River. Volume <br />III. Logan County - Sedgwick County. Colorado. June. 1977. <br /> <br />2) Colorado Department of Highways. District IV; Hvdroloqv <br />and Hvdraulics Report. Bridge Replacement South of Crook. <br />Colorado. Colorado State Highway No. 55. June. 1985. <br /> <br />3) Colorado Division of Water Resources; Investiqation of <br />Crook Problems Report. 1980. <br /> <br />4) U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Omaha District: Minutes <br />of 404 Public Hearing Application No. CO 2SB OXT 2 006130 <br />November. 1984. <br /> <br />The Corps' Floodplain Report was prepared for the Colorado <br />Water Conservation Board. The Report presents the hydrology <br />and hydraulic data for the study reach. The CDOH's hydrology <br />and hydraulic report presented data for establishing water <br />surface elevations for the 10-year. 50-year and 100-year flood <br />events and included field surveyed channel and valley <br />cross-sectional data. The remaining two reports provided <br />useful basic data and an accounting of local sentiment <br />regarding flood issues. <br /> <br />Muller Engineering Company. Inc.. Denver.
