.

34

THE ARKANSAS RIVER FLOOD OF JUNE 3-5, 1921.

- ----

Although l~ttle if any of the St.-Charles drainage basin lies within
the area of llltensest rainfall, it was subject to very heavy rain
w.hich began during the evening of June 3, and lasted through th~
mght. The crest flow occurred about 1a. m. June 4 and lasted for
an hour. From measurements of cross section and slope this dis-
charge was estimated to be 71,800 second-feet.

Estimated dischargc of St. Charlc., River, .Tlme 3-7, 1921.

.

Time.

Stage.

Approxi.
mate
dlscharg..

J.ne 3, 4.lJO p. m..... .................. ....... Chico Creek rises in the central part of El Paso
County, Hi miles east of Colorado Springs, and flows southward to the
Arkansas, which it joins H miles cast of Pueblo. Its principal
tributary, Black Squirrel Creck, enlers Chico Creek a few miles
above the mouth. Throughout t.he uppcr half of its course the
creek has an average fall of G;) feet to the mile; in the lower half
the fall is 29 feet to the mile. The clrainage basin lies wholly within
the area of the Great Plains and has a rolling topography. On ac-
count of the small normal rainfall, Chico Creek carries little water
except after heavy rains. The total drainage area is 750 square
miles.
No information regarding rainfall in this basin during the flood
is available, but as Chico Creek drains an area adjacent to that of
Fountain Creek the general storm probably extended over its basin
also.
The State engineer's office measured the cross section and slope of
Chico Creek 'near the mouth and determined the crest discharge to
be 28,600 second-feet.
