.

.

.

PROJECT SUMMARY
DOLORES WATER CONSERVANCY DISTRICT
IRRIGATION OF NEW LANDS

Proiect Sponsor: Dolores Water Conservancy District

Tvpe of Proiect: Agricultural, irrigation system extension for irrigation of new lands in
Montezuma County

Location: About 20 miles northwest of Cortez

Proiect Description: The project involves a system of pipelines, pumps and related
facilities to deliver water to the District's Dove Creek Canal system for the irrigation of
4,000 acres of new lands which are presently dry-land farmed. The major facilities and
the locations of the proposed irrigated areas are shown on the attached figure.
Water will be delivered to irrigators under pressure for sprinkler irrigation only.
Adequate water will be provided for full service irrigation as defined by the District.
Water for the project will be obtained by the purchase of shares in the Montezuma Valley
Irrigation Company (MVIC) and by acquisition of Totten Reservoir (3,300 acre-foot
capacity), which is presently owned by MVIC. All MVIC water rights are decreed for
diversion from the Dolores River. The project will provide an estimated yield of7,840
acre- feet per year in most years. The District's maintenance and construction crews will
perform the construction work. A carriage contract with the US Bureau of Reclamation
(USBR) is required for the use of USBR facilities to deliver water for the proposed
project.

Schedule: The District is in the process of acquiring MVIC water and hopes to complete
acquisition in early 200 I.Construction is scheduled to begin in 2002 and will be done in
stages over a period of four years.

Environmental Documentation: An Environmental Assessment is in preparation by the
Grand Junction Office of the USBR for the carriage contract.

Total Estimated Cost: The costs for acquisition ofMVIC water and Totten Reservoir
are $2,2S0,000. Construction costs, escalated for inflation over four years, are
conservatively estimated at $S,817,000 for a total project cost of$8,067,000.

Loan Requested: The District is requesting a Construction Fund loan of $7,260,000 for
funding of 90 percent of total project costs.
