1

~

ground water, for camp sites they propose to
build. We do this kind of thing. We have
worked for the Air Force Academy down in the
Colorado Springs area in finding their water
supplies for them. The Rocky Mountain Arsenal -
everybody has probably heard about that - the
Quality of Water Branch was instrumental in
preparing the report that described those
particular conditions and this has now been
released to the open file somewhat belatedly.
Other special types of studies are to do re-
search in certain problems that other agencies
are not involved in.

Here again I want to mention Colorado
state University because they have been
especially active in this continuing type pro-
gram in maintaining observations of water levels
in wells, especially in the eastern part of the
state. And I'd like to mention the Bureau of
Reclamation who has supported this continuing
type program by making observations in the San
Luis Valley. The special studies also have
been a place where Colorado state University
has been especially helpful. They have picked
up particular problems, one of them that they
have investigated quite extensively is possi-
bilities for recharge. We cooperated with
them on these studies. They took the agricul-
tural phase of it and we took the public water
supply phase.

1

There is one more point that I want to
make before I quit and that is, planning for
the future now requires that we think in terms
of not making small unit studies but making
broad regional studies. Initially we tackled
what were palatable lumps so that we could
make the study, get the report out, and evalu-
ate a particular unit of an aquifer or of a
water body. Our plans now are to combine these
particular unit reports into a comprehensive
report that will be of considerably more use
to planning. The first one that we have
initiated and is underway right now is a study
of the High Plains area, especially this
