I

review briefly our ground water program and
this will be sort of a prelude to some remarks
that Mr. Kuiper will make later on in the pro-
gram. The growth of the program is illustrated
by this particular chart over here and the
colors I'll describe. I don't know what color
this one is, but it is something like purple,
and it represents the amount of state or local
cooperating funds that have gone into the pro-
gram. The blue represents that they have been
matched on a 50-50 basis. The green is funds
that are all-federal funds and they have been
contributed chiefly by other agencies of the
federal government. The Missouri River Basin
program, for example, is probably the largest
contributor.

Our studies in ground water, as the chart
shows, started in 1946 - fiscal year 1946. It
started about October of 1946 and maintained,
as you see, a fairly constant level over a
period of years. The type of study that we
have can be described in our three-phase program.
Vie have three phases to it. One is the aerial
appraisal type studies which are chiefly de-
signed to show the extent of the water-bearing
formations, the extent of development of those
basins, to describe and define the problems
that are existing and those that are likely to
occur. This particular map here shows the ex-
tent of the aerial type investigations and the
brown pattern represents the current field work
that is going on in the area. The blue pattern
is areas where the field investigations have
been completed and, in some cases, a type of
report has been put out. The other pattern
here, this purple, indicates areas where pub-
lished reports are now available.

1

All of our investigations result in reports
and the reports that we have designed right now
initially come out with just basic information
that we have. In other words, we are trying
to get the information out to the public as soon
as possible so they can use it in developing new
sources, understanding their old sources better,
