1440

I

In order to have some semblance of
orderly recommendations regarding these
developments, the last Congress, right at
the end of the session, provided for the
appointment of a National Wilderness
Recreational Resources Commission. This
commission consists of eight members from
the Congress, two Republicans from the House,
two Democrats from the House, two Democrats
from the Senate and two Republicans from the
Senate. In addition there are seven citizens
appointed by the President of the United
States. Mr. Laurence Rockefeller was appoin-
ed the Chairman of the group by the President,
together with six other people of whom one
was the National Executive Secretary of the
Izaak Walton League, Mr. Joe Penfold. Many
of you will remember him. He has some very
strong views, you will recollect, upon this
subj ect .

I had the wrong number at the Water
Congress, Ben. There are 25 to be appointed
on an advisory council to this; commission and
these 25 are to represent various interests
throughout the United States and we found
there wasn't much publicity given to this
matter and we were afraid we were about to be
slighted. We also noted the passage of the
bill some month or so ago and asked that
some steps be taken to have some one appointed
either on this Commission or the advisory
council. The thing lay rather dormant until
we got a letter recently from a group mostly
headed by the Cattlemen's Association that
Harold Christy put us onto which indicated
that we had to act immediately or we would
be forever lost. So in order to tie this
thing together it seemed we had to send some-
body and you know how it is when you make a
motion, you always get appointed to the
committee? Well, I made the motion so I got
appointed to the committee. The Water Board
of Denver did say that if I should be
appointed to this advisory commission I
could take the time to work on it and there-
fore we got together quite a bit of support
in the form of letters. Larry Sparks sent
one, Mr. Palmer from the mining group sent
one, quite a number of letters were sent to
support this.

I
