I think, as I say, it is a dangerous
type of legislation because it has an
emotional appeal back east. People will
say let's establish these wilderness areas
for posterity, not knowing or little
caring that they are already established. I
I think it behooves this Board to take a
strong stand against it. Our Congressmen
have already written to this Board re-
questing guidance on it. I just had a
letter from Senator Allott stating he is
vitally interested. Senator Carroll has
written me and Congressman Aspinall and all
of them want some expression from Colorado."

MR: STAPLETON::

"The Water Congress at its first
annual convention this week end endorsed
and recommended .that Mi. Rockefeller, who
is the..'head of a new committee in Congress,
the name of which escapes me, appoint Glenn
Saunders on that advisory committee. That
committee is meeting either yesterday or
today in Washington to select a 15 man com-
mittee and I think it might be interesting
to hear briefly of the plans of the committee
and anything that Mr. Saunders might add to
Mr. Sparks'.remarks. Mr. Saunders."

MR. SAUNDERS:

"Mr. Sparks is so right about the
rather fanatical character of the people who
are supporting the legislation policies re-
garding the limitation of use of our national
lands to a very small amount of people. I
remember being in Washington at a hearing
and seeing a very large, fat man, with a
long beard clear down over his extended
middle. The most peculiar thing. .about him
was that he was barefoot in this committee
in Congress. I asked who in the world was
that character and was told he was one of
those 'wild life' followers. Now this group,
when. you look them over, are not the kind
of people who are out here touring our
mountains or participating in our recrea-
tional facilities. They are, as Larry says,
a rather fanatical group. -
