7220

MR. STAPLETON:

MR. PRINTZ:

concept. A wild river concept is fine in
certain environments, but it can't be indis-
criminately applied to every environment. And
this is one that does not in my opinion, as a
geologist, adapt itself to a wild river environ-
ment.

I

A number of you will speak and there are a
lot of environmentalists here. We have a clear
position of environmental groups. I am a geol-
ogist, I live with the environment. I have been
in the field all my life. I think I know some-
thing about the environment because I deal with
it all the time. There has to be a compatibility
of the total environment and man. 'l'here is no
way, in my opinion as a geologist, that this can
be done here without channelization first.

Thank you."

"Thank you, Mr. Newton. I will now hear
from Mr. Ray Printz of the South Suburban Park
District. Mr. Printz."

"We are passing out among you a position
paper that in essence is a report of plans given
this morning by the City of Littleton.

"

What we are really asking is this - that we
stop and look, do not delay the channelization as
needed, do not delay the closing of the dam, but
please stop and look and see, are there alter-
natives to this plan? Is there a reasonableness
to have an open park where the river can run in
its natural state? That does not bother in any
way the City of Columbine, and the way the channel
will exist in this area. You might read along
with me, please. The statement that I have
indicated here as suggested by the Board of I
South Suburban District. The Park District is
most concerned that this area in question should
be placed in public ownership for public use .
and public enjoyment. The concept of a large
natural park is reasonable for the following
reasons.
