Columbine. We do feel very definitely that the
people who are in the park and open space busi-
ness tell us that we can't possibly in the
metropolitan area provide the necessary park and
open space land that is needed for our projected
population.

The plan, or the idea, I won't call it a
plan, but the idea that we have asked the Corps
to look at in taking this natural open area
south of Columbine to the base of the dam or the
outlet of the dam would provide an additional
approximately 400 to 450 acres of primitive
open area. I don't mean sprinkled lawn developed
parks. I mean something left pretty much in its
primitive area, or its primitive state.

We feel that by doing this that possibly we
can make the dollars that are projected to be
spent on this channelization go a little bit
further and provide dual use. With those remarks
I would like to say that the newspapers have
played this up and rightfully so, but unfor-
tunately when I was called by a newspaper reporter
two days before receiving Mr. Sparks' letter of
notification of this meeting, I was a little bit
in the dark as to exactly what the newspaper
wanted and why, and he told me that Mr. Sparks
was calling a meeting which is today. Conse-
quently Littleton got a lot of publicity that
we really weren't seeking. But we still think
that due to the fact that the funding for this
channelization is not yet available that we are
not impeding the closure of Chatfield Dam by
asking the Corps to investigate a possible alter-
native.

to exactly what we are asking the corps to do.
