The IOO-year and 500-year boundary is important in <br />establishing an estimate of average annual flood <br />damages for making an economic analysis of the <br />feasibility proposed flood control projects. <br /> <br />6. The 500-year boundary is important in establishing risk <br />and actuarial rates for flood insurance purposes and is <br />required by FEMA rules and regulations for appeals. <br />revisions. and amendments to flood insurance maps. <br /> <br />7. Proper design of bank protection. such as riprap. <br />involves knowledge of characteristics of the IOO-year <br />flood and the 500-year flood. <br /> <br />8. Flood control structures. such as levees. to met FEMA <br />standards. must have a top elevation equal to or <br />greater than the IOo-year flood plus three feet or the <br />500-year flood plus one foot. whichever is higher. <br /> <br />Our review of floodplain information designated and <br />approved by the Board over the last five years (94 studies) <br />indicated mUltiple flood outlines were prepared on 65 <br />percent of the previously designated studies. <br /> <br />-7- <br />
