, -,,:)

Water Availability Task Force to access water supply conditions and drought potential statewide
has been scheduled for Mar. 22 in Denver.

.

The weekly map of
drought in the U. S. as of Mar.
7 published by the National
Drought Mitigation Center
shows Colorado not in
drought, but the extreme
southeast corner of the state is
shown as "abnormally dry."
Northern Arizona and New
Mexico, and western Kansas
and Nebraska are also shown
as abnormally dry.

SURFACE WATER SUPPLY INDEX
MARCH 1, 2000

Colorado Drought
Planning: We have completed
our survey of municipal water
providers that provide 2,000
acre-feet or more of treated
water to determine the extent of drought planning in Colorado. The results confirmed that only a
few Colorado communities have done any serieJUs risk based drought assessment or drought
mitigation planning. .

National Drought Policy Commission (NDPC): On Mar. 8 the NOPC released a
revised draft of its report "Preparing for Drought in the New Millennium." The document is
available at http://www.[sa.usda.gov/drought/. Comments received by Mar. 31 will be
considered in preparing the final report. The Commission is particularly interested in hearing
from the general public on their personal experiences with drought and the effects drought has
had on the enviromnent.

Near Normal

Moderate Drought

Severe Drought ,

Governor's Conference of Floods and Droughts: The DNR, using CWCB funds, has
hired a contractor to compile the proceedings of the Governor's Flood and Drought Conference
on a compact disc. The CD should be available free to conference attendees by May.

Colorado Dam Site Inventory: We are synthesizing information and eliminating
duplicate sites to give the best possible information about existing and potential reservoir sites to
localities. The dam site database has been converted to a more relational database in Microsoft
Access to make entering, finding, reporting information easier. This database may be updated
again after the new water rights tabulation comes out in July 2000. The objective is to produce a
series of county maps showing the aerial extent of potential new reservoir sites or reservoir
enlargements for use by county planning commissions in making land use decisions.

.

8
