consider this separately.

I

As far as the public hearings that were
held.:" they were held in Aurora. Colonel
Pendergrass who conducted those hearings has
assured the peorle at those hearings that he
would abide by the public requests if they did
not want the specific projects. They would be
considered and the public wishes would be heard.
Because of confusion over the names of the proj-
ects and the place in which the hearings were
held. the Douglas County people that would be
directly affected by these projects have not
had any real chance other than to present the
petitions in Aurora. It
seems that a part of the motivation for this
project has been to counteract the effect of
real estate developers coming in. In fact. the
area directly:affected is not in real stress at
this time because the people have no intention
of selling it. or they have indicated that.

I

These landowners open up their private
property to the public for field trips. many
school class sessions are held out there. be-
cause it is a very beautiful area. In a field
trip recently with the Army Corps of Engineers
District biologist from Omaha. he admitted that
this is probably the most diverse environmental
area in the entire state and that there are
three completely distinct climatic vegotationa
represented in this area.

The state currently owns 80 acres in the

-25-
