3. Geochemical Characterization and Age Dating of Groundwater in the Denver Basin

.

Beneficiary/Grantee/Contractor: Colorado Geological Survey, Various, CSU
Amount of Request: $22,000 Ranking:

Medium

Product Produced: The purpose of this project is to conduct a geochemical characterization of
groundwater in the Denver Basin by using major ion geochemistry and isotopic dating methods on
samples of groundwater extracted from existing water supply or monitoring wells. Age dating of
groundwater can provide data on aquifer recharge rates and groundwater flow paths, These data can be
used in water supply planning, identifying recharge areas, and estimating the lifetime of the ground-
water resource. The proposed geochemical characterization will supplement the Groundwater Resources
Mapping Project, now underway in the Environmental Geology Section of CGS, by providing
information on a scale useful for local planning and decision-making.

Water Planning Relationship: This program would assist local entities in land-use decision-making
and long-term water supply planning by providing detailed groundwater geochemical information to
supplement the physical information gathered during the Groundwater Resource Mapping Project.

Recommendation: Staff gives a medium recommendation to funding of this project because of its
importance in water planning efforts,

4. Groundwater Resource Mapping Program

Beneficiary /G rantee/Contractor:
Amount of Request:

Colorado Geological Survey, Various
$80,000 Ranking:

High

. Product produced: The purpose of this program is to collect and map groundwater resource data on a
scale that is useful for local planning and decision-making.

Counties, municipalities, water supply districts, conservation districts, and private entities need details
about the groundwater resources in their area. This information is essential for planning efforts and
informed decision making related to the local groundwater resource. Mapping 7.5' quadrangles at a
I :24,000 scale (I inch= 2,000 feet) provides the necessary detaiL

Groundwater resource mapping will build on recent geologic mapping of the selected quadrangles and
groundwater mapping of adjacent quadrangles Dawson Butte and Castle Rock North by CGS (2005-06).
This study will provide the following on each quad: water well distribution map, water level map, well
yield data, depth/elevation map of aquifer units, spring location map, aquifer descriptions, and a
summary report.

Water Planning Relationship: This program assists local entities in land-use decision-making and
long-term water supply planning by providing detailed groundwater resource information.

Recommendation: Staff gives a high recommendation to this project because of its importance in
local water planning efforts.

5.
