OULt:>

I

For future research, which will be in addi-
tion to our present program, we have two pro-
posals which have been approved for funding by
OWRR. The proposal by Dr. J. P. Waltz, Depart-
ment of Geology, and myself, Department of Civil
Engineering, is a study of the problem of flows
between bedrock formations and alluvial aquifers.
Specific areas to be studied are, Kiowa-Bijou
Basin, Black Squirrel Basin and the Ogallala
formation. The proposed project will be con-
ducted over a three-year period with total
funds of $127,800.

The proposal by Dr. H. Morel-Seytoux, De-
partment of Civil Engineering is a study on
infiltration rates into soil due to natural or
artificial recharge. Techniques will be
developed to predict the effects on infiltration
rates of cyclic precipitation, areal distribu-
tion of precipitation and of soil types. This
project will be conducted over a three-year
period with total funds of $81,000. Both of
these projects are on a matching fund basis, as
Dr. Evans has mentioned, and requires that half
of the total funds be contributed by state
sources which at this time appears to be a
slight problem.

A proposal intended to be submitted to
OWRR by Dr. E. A. Breitenbach and myself, will
be to develop planning and management concepts
applicable to ground water-surface water basins.
It is anticipated that the Ogallala aquifer will
be selected for confirmation of the techniques
developed. The proposal will be for a five-year
period with a request for funding of $725,000.

I

This about summarizes our program in the
ground water area. Again I would like to
emphasize that it is not just a part of Civil
Engineering but an interdepartmental discipline
in which we try to draw upon the total resources
of Colorado State University.

Thank you."
