As another part of our plan of implement a-
tion we set up surveillance stations. We
originally started with 77 on the streams in
Colorado. We aave now increased them to 88.
We are now in the planning stages of increas-
ing that to 128 stations. These we try to 1
sample on a once-a-month basis. But due to
lack of manpower and other commitments, we
don't alway" qet around to them ev",y month. .
We are in hopes that maybe this year we will
be able to do it on a once-a-month basis.

Originally we sampled for some 26 para-
meters or analyzed for 26 parameters. We
since then have moved this down. Let us say,
if we found that a certain station had no
selenium after six months, we didn't continue
testing for selenium or mercuries, etc. We
check it. however, on a six months basis.

Another thing that we have done is pur-
chase a trailer laboratory. A mobile home
type trailer was made into a field laboratory.
We have a Chevrolet carryall truck to pull it
around. It has three purposes. One, where
we find a particular station that is out of
bounds, we attach the trailer to this location
to find out why the particular station was out
of bounds. In other words, they start checking
at this particular station and work upstream
from there. We have been using it lately on
stream studies. You probably have read of
the study on the Cache la poudre. We are
presently working on a followup study on
Clear Creek. We also use it for training
purposes.

We find that in many cases when we go
into a community, set up the laboratory at
their sewage treatment plant, invite the city I.
officials in and show them that with better
laboratory control they can get better control
of the treatment facilities. In many cases it
has helped convince the city officials that
they should get a laboratory for their plant
