5440

As another item of interest, on Febru-
ary 7th, major electrical systems of the
Eastern and Western united states and Canada
were interconnected for test purposes to form
the largest power grid in the world. The I
test closure through the Bureau's Missiouri -
River Basin project, linked virtually all
major power systems of this country, plus
major systems of Canada. The closure tied
together some 265,000 miles of main transmis-
sion lines of 209 public and private power
systems with a generating capacity of nearly
245 million kilowatts, representing about 40
,
percent of the world's electrical power
capacity. The intertie has been in service
since February 7 and the operation is very
encouraging. Barring unforeseen difficulties,
the ties will remain closed. A close watch
will be maintained throughout the systems in-
volved, and if major operational difficulties
are encountered the points of intertie will be
opened, technical difficulties corrected, and
the ties reestablished.

The CRSP power marketing situation con-
tinues to improve. We are not yet fully in
the black since we are not quite able to make
our full interest payments after meeting O&M
costs. Our progress is satisfactory to meet
project commitments during this build-up
phase.

By the end of 1966, 93 power systems had
signed contracts for the purchase of storage
Project firm power. These contracts provide
for the delivery of 959,000 kilowatts during
the summer season and 712,000 kilowatts dur-
ing the winter season. This is an increase
of 50 percent in the power under contract com-
pared with a year ago. Our estimates indicate
that customers will require the full amount
of power under contract by 1970 or 1971.

I

Most of the 93 contracts are with prefer-
ence type customers which are guaranteed the
