I

A paper entitled 'Methods for controlling
the ground-water regime--exploitation and con-
servation' was presented at a meeting of the
International Union of Geodosy and Geophysics at
Berkeley, California. This paper summarizes the
results of the pilot study on the relation of
ground water to surface water in the Arkansas
Valley in the 25-mile study reach between La
Junta and Las Animas. It indicates that con-
sumptive use of water in the area increased con-
siderably in the past several years concurrently
with the development of ground-water. This fact
suggests a relationship and changes in agricul-
tural practices indicating an increase in consump-
tive use. The data are insufficient to distin-
guish the effects to each one of these elements.
However, it is rather definite that the effects
are there and can be pretty well tied down. The
budget analysis also indicates that the off-
stream reservoirs that are presently in use are
an inefficient way of storing water due to the
excessive evaporation from the reservoir surface.

In other areas of the investigation the
analysis of the data indicates the extent of non-
beneficial consumptive use by phreatophytes can
be reduced somewhat by the installation of large
capacity wells in an area that is now covered
with phreatophytes, particularly salt cedar. The
investigation is being conducted by the Survey in
cooperation with your Water Board and Colorado
state University.

I

Several changes will be made in the stream
gaging network in the state during this fiscal
year. The following gaging stations will be
discontinued on september 30th unless there is
sufficient interest to provide financial support
from some other source. There are six stations
that have been in the Water Board program that
will be dropped, primarily because the stations
were operated to collect information for the
Bureau of Reclamation investigations in connec-
tion with project development. Other stations
will be installed to provide similar data for
areas of new project study. The stations that
will be dropped from the Water Board program this
