:The County Committee is made up of people who are the ones that'
appropriate. They are farmers that are elected by their peers, the
farmers in Mesa County: They look at the practical side of what the-
farmer requests. If it looks good, they refer this request to the
Soil Conservation Service for feasibility engineering and layout
design. ' ..

We think that the practices that we are putting in the impact area
probably will have quite a little effect on the abatement or reduction
of salinity in that area.

I

Thank you.

MR. SPARKS: ,I might point out fOJ.""the board . that one of the problems
we had initially with this project was that we were concerned that
there would 'not be 'enough effort for on-farm improvements. Part and.
parcel of, the salinity control, is not just simply to line the canals.
We have to do on-farm work also, and, this is where the Soil Conservation
Service comes ,into the picture. We have had problems getting funding.

Now, do you anticipate 'any great problems with future, funding?-

MR. OTT: We were told when this program opened that we
for this program at this rate for:a period of:10 years.
that long to do it.

would be funded
It would take

"

MR. SPARKS:" You say, "at this rate." You are talking about approxi-
mately a million dollars-a year?

MR. OTT: Yes. 1:7 million this:year.

MR. SPARKS: So'we are talking then about some 17 million in 10 years?

MR. OTT: Yes.

'.

MR. VANDEMOER: 'Being a stranger to the impact area, how much of Mesa
County--what percentage of Mesa County are we talking:about?

MR. OTT: The ,~mpact-area?

I

MR. VANDEMOER: Yes.

MR. OTT: The agricultural area of Mesa County--it probably ,comprises
about a fourth of the ~rrigated'agricultural area.

MR. VANDEMOER: The impact are~a is one-fourth of your total farm area?

-18-
