<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />NEWS RELEASE <br /> <br />FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br />September 19, 2002 <br /> <br />CONTACT: <br /> <br />Dawn Taylor <br />(303) 866-5887 <br />John Marshall <br />(303) 866-2661 <br /> <br />COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD RELEASES FIGURES ON WATER STORAGE, DAM <br />REPAIRS ' <br />Walcher Calls Numbers a Good Step at a Necessary Time <br /> <br />DENVER - Greg Walcher, Executive Director of the Department of Natural Resources released figures today <br />that show that the state has made great strides in dam repair and water storage in the last four years. <br /> <br />"Over the last four years - since Governor Owens took office - we have helped repair, rehabilitate and enlarge <br />over 116,452 acre feet (at) of storage in a number of reservoirs, including Jackson Lake and Elder Reservoir, <br />just to name two," said Walcher. <br /> <br />An acre-foot of water is enough water to meet the needs of two households per year. <br /> <br />Walcher added that the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) has also, in the last four years, loaned <br />$15,2 million to water projects around the State to remove or prevent dam safety restrictions and enlarge <br />existing reservoirs, Walcher said that the assistance being provided by the CWCB is welcome news to <br />Coloradans, Several recent news stories have focused on the fact that dam safety restrictions have reduced <br />reservoir storage, and many Coloradans are calling for repairs that are already underway, <br /> <br />"A recent poll found that 70 percent of Colorado voters support more and new water storage," Walcher said. <br />"1 am proud that the Owens Administration has been leading the effort to store more water." <br /> <br />Additionally, the CWCB has loaned $42,86 million for new reservoir storage projects totaling 34,869 acre feet. <br />Such projects include Parker Water and Sanitation's Reuter Hess Reservoir near Parker, Dolores Water <br />Conservancy's WETP ACK project, and Fortune Reservoir in Jefferson County. <br /> <br />Walcher added that the CWCB recently sent letters to over 1,000 reservoir owners across the State to inform <br />them of programs available for repair, rehabilitation and enlargement of facilities.
