I

1

MR. SHAPIRO:

MR. STAPLETON:

MR. SPARKS:

.J..JI..l.o

Board and public op~n~on by itself could
insure the immediate building of Chatfield
Dam. I feel no\~ that the action of the
citizenry in forming a committee known as
'Action NOW - Dam the platte' was a more
foresighted decision than I originally had
anticipated. And I would urge your people to
continue a widespread, aggressive, feet to
the fire campaign with your Congressmen and
with the press because, as I figure it,
there are going to be five more flood seasons
before the gates are closed under the present
schedule and a catastrophe could certainly
very well occur.

So, Mr. Shapiro, I am hoping that the
news media will give you adequate publicity
to encourage a source of funds that will help
you insure your part in the program."

"Thank you."

"In the meantime, Larry, could we ask you
to communicate with the two congressmen in-
volved and our Senators to the point where
you are always, and I know you are, up to
date on where we can help?"

"Certainly. The two people I talked with
primarily in Washington were Senator Allott
and congressman Rogers. As soon as they get
any word at all on the budget message they
are going to call me by telephone and let me
know \~hat it is. They then will request an
opinion from the Corps of Engineers, based
upon the budget message, as to how it will
affect the Corps schedule. If the Corps
replies that it will slow their schedule
even further than what is now contemplated,
they intend to m~,e a fight to increase the
appropriation.

As soon as that budget message is deliv-
ered, which should be within two weeks now,
\~e will know what course of action we will
have to follow."
