I

I

MR. STAPLETON:

l-1R. HEADLEY:

MR. STAPLETON:

MR. HEADLEY:

MR. STAPLETON:

MR. HEADLEY:

MR. STAPLETON:

present status of our planning. I would
entertain any questions that you may have
and I will do my best to answer them."

"Mr. Headley, what information does the
Corps of Engineers have that the absence of
the dam at this time is curtailing expansion
of existing businesses in the south Platte
area of metropolitan Denver or is "the":deter-
rent of new business coming into the area?
Do you have any information on that?"

"I'm sorry, to my knowledge no, I don't
have any information on that."

"Assuming that there is a substantial
deterrent because of the danger of floods in
the area, if you were giving advice to a
prospective businessman to expand his plant,
when would you tell him, based on your in-
formation, he could safely be assured that
Chatfield was a reality?"

"Well, you are asking me to tell you what
Congress is going to do and I am sorry, I
don't believe I can answer that."

"All right. Then tell me what are the
factors involved that you can answer. I'm
not trying to put you on the spot. I am
trying to get some information as to what
are the factors so that somebody can make
that determination."

"The only advice that I could give the
gentleman would be that we are, in the omaha
District at any rate, working on this project
as fast as we possibly can and the only thing
that will hold us down will be the appropria-
tions from congress. And I don't want to put
Congress on the spot either, as far as that
goes."

"Well, we might want to. We want to know
how and where."
