J".

Mt-. Crawford: "I have a letter from Senator Johnson".

UNITED STATES SENATE

December 31, 1953

I

Honorable Ivan C. CraNford
Director
Colorado Water Conservation Board
Denver, Colorado

Dear Mr. Crawford:

Thank you for your letter of December 21st in which you
furnish additional information pertaining to the Curecanti
Project. ......

. I am bitterly disappointed at the proposal of Secretary
IkKay for the Upper Colorado River Basin. The inclusion
of Glen Canyon and the exclusion of the Cross Mountain
Project cannot be justified. Colorado furnishes over
72 percent of all the water in the Colorado River Basin
and under the Department of Interior's proposal, would
lose a maj or portion of the benefits of this water. The
Interior Department's proposal to include Glen Canyon and .
other projects at the expense of Colorado will compel me
to fight it to the last ditch.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The Cross Mountain Project could be built to store over
5,ooc,000 acre feet of water. This in turn would enable
the Upper Basin States to more easily fulfill their com-
mitment for delivery of water to the Lower Basin States.

It can be constructed much quicker than Glen Canyon and
would contribute substantially to the complete develop-
ment of the Upper Colorado River and also start to pay
back more quickly the cost of the project.

. . . . . ... . . . . . . .

Sincerely,

I

ECJ:ES
enclosure.

/s/ Ed C. Johnson

Mr. Crawford: "The next item'from this office is the question of'
printing more University of Colorado reports. We have ordered 500
and of those 500, 250 were delivered yesterday. The report costs
$2.00 per copy, for the first 500. ~ suggestion is that another
500 be oroered, as we expect there will be a continued demand. Sug_.
gestions from this Board would be welcome.
