Dam Building in Wilderness Areas <br /> <br />MR. CRAWFORD: ~I am in receipt of a letter from <br />Mr. Bailey--perhaps you had better <br />present it, Mr. Bailey." <br /> <br />MR. BAI:\..EY: "A fellow came to me the other day. <br />He wanted to build a little reservoir <br />in the Wilderness area for. supplemental <br />water and hadn't been able to make any <br />progress. It occurred to me that <br />possibly there was a Forest Service <br />policy that might be restricting our <br />water development in the State. I <br />wrote to Dean Crawford, asking him to <br />inquire as to what their policies were <br />and see if that was just a local <br />proposition or a matter that might be <br />referred to this Board." <br /> <br />MR. CRAWFORD: <br /> <br />"I have been in contact with the <br />Forest Service in regard to this <br />matter. The national policy in <br />Wilderness areas is that those areas <br />be kept in a wilderness condition. <br />It is not a matter of law but is a <br />regulation by the Secretary of the <br />Interior. In this particular case, <br />it is the problem of a'small lake <br />in North Park where by raising an <br />already existing dam four or five <br />feet, five or six hundred more acre- <br />feet of water could be obtained. <br />The policy is this. If it can be <br />done without harming the scenic <br />beauty of the wilderness or destr9ying <br />wild life, permission may be given. <br />The Forest Service does not permit <br />roads to be built. <br /> <br />I <br />
