1\30

MR. CRAWFORD:

'l3U

"r~y I again repeat that Mr. Larson
said this date of 1960 is not final?"

I

Report on Surface Water Gaqinq Proqram--USGS

"We will now take up the 4th item on
the agenda and ask Mr. Bell for his
report. "

MR. BAILEY:

MR. BELL:

"

"1 am very glad to have this opportunity
to report to you on theprogress made in
our cooperative stream-gaging program
during the fiscal year which is about to
end. However, our program with the Board is
only a portion of our surface water work
in the State. Since there are several
relatively new members on the Board and
since it has been some time since I have
reviewed our programs with you, I believe
that the entire Board would be interested
in a report on all our stream-gaging
programs in Colorado.

For the benefit of those not famiiiar with
our organization, 1 should say that the
Geological Survey is a research and fact-
finding agency more than seventy-five years
old. The Water Resources Division is but
one of four functional divisions which
carry out the duties assigned to the Survey.
The others are the Topographic, the Geologic
and the Conservation Divisions.

The activities of the Water Resources Division
are both defined and limited by Congressional
authority "for gaging the streams and
determining the water supply of the United
States and for the investigation of under-
ground currents and artesian wells, and for I
the preparation of reports upon the best
methods of utilizing the water resources."
To accomplish these objectives the Division
is organized into Branches for Surface Water,
Ground Water, Quality of Water, and
General Hydrology. This morning 1 speak
only for the Surface Water Branch. Mr.
McLaughlin, the District GeologisiJ, will
report on the activities of the Ground Water
Branch.
