7'435

I

pressing ground-water problems th~oughout
Colorado, the appropriations to the Colorado
Water Conservation Board for these studies
were increased to $20,000 in F. Y. 1956 and
$30,000 in F.Y. 1957. The program for
F.Y. 1957 will consist primarily of the
following:

1. Kit Carson County - Field work in
Kit Carson County, which was begun in July 1954,
as completed in the fall of 1955 and the report
is now in preparation and will be completed in
F.Y. 1957. It is anticipated that the maps
will be completed in July and will then be
ready for transmittal to the Director, U. S.
Geological Survey and the Director, Colorado
\'later Conservation Board for approval for
release to the open file. This will make the
maps available at an early date to the public
while the report is being processed for
publication.

The maps will consist of (a) depth-
to-water map showing the depthy to water throughout
the County, (b) depth-to-bedrock map showing
the depth to bedrock (base of the aquifer),
(c) bedrock-contour map showing the shape
and slope of the bedrock, and (d) water-table
contour map showing the slope and configuration
of the water table. With these maps the
potential water user can determine approximate
depths of drilling required, approximate lift,
thickness of the water-bearing ~aterials, and
other information useful in the proper and
economic developmect of ground-water supplies.

I

The manuscript of the report on Kit Carson
County will be completed during the first part
of F.Y. 1957 and should be ready for transmittal
to the Directors of the Water Conservation Board
and the Geological Survey by Fall and approval
for publication as a Geological Survey Water-
Supply Paper.

2. Prowers Count! - Field work in
Prowers County was begun ate in August 1955 and is
being continued during the present field season.
The work on this pro~ct is behind schedule owing
.to the resignation this Spring of the project chief
to enter more lucrative private employment. The
replacement for him will not arrive in Colorado
until early August. A test drilling program is
now under way in Prowers County and it probably
will continue for seve,tal weeks into F. Y. 1957.
