Stations I, 2, and 3 all
exhibited a decrease in the total
number of taxa observed in
2005. Station I decreased from
25 taxa in 1999 to 22 taxa in
2005, Station 2 decreased from
27 taxa in 1999 to 19 taxa in
2005, and Station 3 decreased
from 28 taxa in 1999 to 13 taxa
in 2005. Several sensitive
species were observed at all the
stations in 2005: Mayflies,
Epeorus longimanus and
Paraleptophlebia sp.; Stonefly,
Chloroperlidae; and Caddisfly,
Lepidostoma.

~

t

.

r.. 7 Macrolnvertebrate BCI Comparison
Pre and Post Restoration
__. Station I below the
Slate Creek bridge exhibited an excellent macroinvertebrate community in 2005 equal to that
observed prior to restoration. Station 2 decreased in the number oftaxa, BCI score and CTQa score, .
but remains in the excellent category. Station 2 realized in-stream disturbance by others in 2004 and
the results indicate purturbation. Station 3 also decreased in the number oftaxa and BCI and CTQa
scores, moving it into the good category. Station 3 realized disturbances due to in-stream habitat
construction activities by S.G. Company in 2005. The BCI scores already indicate improved
conditions with the number of insect taxa (diversity) slower to respond. Migration known as "drift"
is a significant re-distribution mechanism for aquatic macroinvertebrates. The rate of return for the
number of taxa (to pre-project levels) is related to the size and condition of the watershed above the
project. The Blue River is a regulated stream that has a large impoundment above this project. It
is reasonable to expect a slower rate of return to pre-project macroinvertebrate diversity. This is the
primary reason for reduced number of taxa and lower BCI/CTQa scores in these lower stations. If
trends are typical of other restoration project Queen of the River Consultants has completed, these
stations will improve dramatically by the next time monitoring is completed.

. Channel Stability/Fish Habitat:

Channel stability and fish habitat scoring sheets were completed at the same sites as in 1999:(1)
Upper above Hwy. 9 at power lines; (2) Middle at Bluffs; (3) Lower at Old Boundary. Channel
stability and fish habitat scoring sheets can be viewed in Appendix VI. Comparisons of 1999 and
2005 channel stability and fish habitat ratings illustrated in Table I shows that at all stations
conditions have improved due to the restoration activities completed.

.
