The purpose of the core is to help develop an integrated hydrologic
and geologic framework for the Denver Basin aquifers. This will enable State, County, and
municipal planners to promote appropriate development of the Basin's water resources. This core-
drilling project is part of a three-year National Science Foundation research study that will focus on
the evolution of the Denver Basin and its landscapes. Drilling commenced March 1, 1999 by
Layne Western, Inc. and was completed in April. Core analysis will continue for three years.

Proiects Under Desil!n

Leroux Creek Water Users Association - Carl Smith Dam Rehabilitation

Authorization: Emergency Infrastructure Account
Water Source: Leroux Creek
Terms of Loan: $300,000 @ 4.0% for 30 years

County: Delta - N of Hotchkiss
Project Yield: 750 ac.ft.
Project Type: Dam Rehabilitation

e

This emergency loan project is the re-construction of the Carl Smith Dam, located 15 miles
north of Hotchkiss in Delta County, which failed unexpectedly in May 1998. The Leroux Creek
Water Users Association has contracted Smith Geotechnical Engineering Consultants of Forth
Collins to analyze design alternatives and complete construction plans and specifications.
Construction is scheduled for the fall of 1999.

Wood Lake Mutual Water & Irrigation Comoanv - Wood Lake Dam Rehabilitation

Authorization: SB 97-008
Water Source: Cache la Poudre River
Terms of Loan: $188,000 @ 3.75% for 30 years

County: Weld- W of Eaton
Project Yield: 3,106 ac.ft.
Project Type: Dam Rehabilitation

This project is the replacement of the Wood Lake Dam outlet works including all control
structures, installation of a toe drain, raising the existing saddle dam, and construction of a spillway
to pass the 50% Probable Maximum Precipitation flood. The need for the improvements is a result
of the State Engineer's Office dam safety requirements. Smith Geotechnical, Inc. of Fort Collins
commenced design in late spring 1998. Construction is scheduled for the fall of 1999.

e
