course it wouldb~,quite a:bit higher under
existing price l~v~ls.

I

The budget for fiscal year 1970, this
is the President's budget, contains $150,000
for the Bear Creek Dam and .Reservoir. When
these funds are made available,surveys,
foundation exploration, and other engineering
studies will be initiated.

Our investigation of the flood and
related water resource probl~ms ~n the
South Platte River basin is being made in
response to a resolution of the Committee
on Public Works of the United States Sen-
ate, dated 14 June 1956. The interim
report on Bear Creek which led to the
authorization of the Bear Creek Dam and
R~servoir, was prepared in response to
the Senate resolution. We have just com-
pleted an interim report on Sand and Toll
Gate Creeks. The report will be forwarded
to our Missouri River Division office for
review within a week or two.

The interim report on Sand and Toll
Gate Creeks recommends construction of
Proje~ts in the Cherry Creek and Sand
Cree~ basins.

I

When the Cherry Creek Dam and Reser-
voir was constructed, reservoir storage
was provided to handle the smaller, more
frequent floods that occurred in the Cherry
Creek basin. As the project was designed,
runoff from floods in excess of the Cherry
Cr~ek reservoir capacity would be carried
by the project's spillway into the Sand
creek basin, as shown on this slide.
Such spills were accept~le at that time,
as the Sand Creek basin was relatively
~ndeveloped. Development in Sand Creek
basin in recent years has increased to the
point where such spills can no longer be
tolerated. If a spill were to occur,
