vv_....

As a part of our contract with the
Geological Survey, we do monitor water
quality in selected places in the state.
particularly ground water. We are con-
cerned with the growing pollution of
ground water. This is done in coopera-
tion with the Pollution Control Commission.
We work very closely with them. It has a
limited staff at this time."

MR. STAPLETON:

"What's the attitude about the arsenal
in terms of cooperation?"

I

MR. SPARKS:

"This is a matter we have not yet
approached the arsenal on. We do have
difficulty with some of the federal agen-
cies. The arsenal has a particular problem
in view of the f~ct there are private con-
tractors who are engaged in the manufacture
of various chemicals. It is even difficult
for the Army to keep up on what some of
these private contractors are doing."

MR. STAPLETON:

"On arsenal property?"

MR. SPARKS I

"Yes.

We have received some second hand
information that there are chemical com-
pounds being discharged at the Rocky
Mountain Arsenal which defy chemical
analysis. I am sure the private con-
tractors know what these chemical com-
pounds are, but by ordinary methods the
laboratories have not been able to break
these chemical compounds down into their
constituent elements. There has been a
very serious problem out at the arsenal,
most of which has been remedied. As a
matter of fact, many wells in the Brighton
area are no longer usable because of the
high toxic content of the water resulting
from contamination from the arsenal.

I

What the Governor is particularly
