459

4. General Discussion

At this point Mr. Larson gave a brief summary of what the
Bureau was doing on the West slope investigation projects. He
reported that they were spending a considerable amount of money
on the Dolores project in getting out a more detailed investi-
gation report. The Bureau was also participating with the Indian
Service and working out a plan for the Navajo' project; also,
they were studying the North Fork of the Gunnison to be sure
of the ultimate plan for the Paonia Project. The Bureau was
spending a large amount of money on the Yampa and White River'
Basins, and it is still working on the Savery Pot-Hook Project
to process the final report. Priority is being given to the
small Curecanti Reservoir study. This was discussed among the
Board members at length.

Mr. Bailey:

"Mr. Nelson of the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
is present, and perhaps he would like to say
a few words."

William H. Nelson, Western Slope Editor of the Grand Junction
Daily Sentinel, appeared before the Board as a representative of
the Water Committee or the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce to
request deletion of the Denver Project from the Colorado River
Storage Project and stated:

"The people of Western Colorado want to support
the Storage Project, but we cannot as long as
the Denver amendment, Section 11 to Senate Bill
1555, remains in the Bill. Personally, I a~ not as optimistic
as Mr. Pughe. I have a thick -file on state-
ments of the opponents. Western Colorado wan~s
to hel~Western Colorado wants to support the
bill without reservations."

Illr. Bailey:

"Mr. Delaney, do you have anything to add to that?"

Mr. Delaney:

"In respect to this situation, let us first start
in by saying -that -in my analysis of thesi tuation,
mistakes probably have been made on the part of
the spokesman for Western Colorado but the mis-
takes have not been all on the part of the
representatives from that side of the Continental
Divide of Colorado. I think our situation
is that we ought to face the facts and analyze
the situation and see if some sort of an overall

I

I
