e.

.

..

conveyance loss and on-farm application efficiency would provide a oomputaticn
of the amount of the total COD81.IIliltive use _t by sudace supplies. The
variables of conveyance loss, cn-fa= efficiency, and the Ilplit bet_en Ilurface
runoff and deep percolation would be "adabl.. that could be adjusted in a
calibration process. The difference bet_en the total consUlllptive Use and the
amount of conllUlllptiv8 use met by surface supplies is the consUlllptive use of
groundwater.

A groundvater IIlOdule would have tWO options. The first would be a
computation of stream depletion by the SDP procedure. Well 10<:&tiOl:ls would be
a.signed an SDP value by the distributive capabilities of GIS which combined
with the vell's CO of groundwater would be inputed to an SDP routine which
computes a hydrograph of stream depletions. These stream depletions could be
totaled for a given ditch system or a given river reach.

The second option would utilize a finite difference groundwater model such
as Visual Hodflov. The above water balance computations would provide input. to
Modflow and Clllibration would take place by comparing water leyels and/or flows
at stream gages. Por each of the gridS of Modflow, the water balance
computation for a given landowner would provide the deep percolation or recharge
that the aquiter has historically received.

Two example case. could be tested. These would be (1) the Boxelder Basin
which is an illlPortant area at' augmentation for the CCWCD and (2) the Julesburg
Irrigation District in the lower South Platte Basin (ie, from about Crook, 00 to
the statelinel which is an important a;cea of well aUgDlentation, COIIlpact issues,
and future conjunctive ulle development of water credits in a Platte Basin
Endangered S~ch. Recovery Program.

A useful product of this South Pl.tte GIS effort would be a color map
Combining different GIS databases (property boundaries, field layout, crop type)
that could be sent to landowners for tMir verification and additional
clarification on such items as pattern' of surface runoff on to or off of their
fa=s or locations of tailwater pondll or seep areall.
